For those who have spring break plans, chances are you are ready to bolt to the beach, enjoy the mountain snow, or doing fun stuff with lifelong friends. Wrap up what you're currently doing -- work, classes, get outta here -- and whatever! However, not so fast... make sure that you have secured your apartment. Here are Seven steps to protect your rental home and 16 tips to protect yourself over spring break. 7 simple steps to maintain your place and your peace of mind!
Make sure your heat is on! Heat could be turned down to conserve heat expenses but don't turn off your heat. Your residence can freeze, damage, not good. It could be 60 wherever you're off to, and over the week, drop below freezing, or when you leave for the shore. If you live in an area where the temperature is not a balmy 40 degrees make sure that you have your thermostat set to a reasonable temperature.
Notify the post office and paper carriers to maintain your email and newspapers until you come back from vacation. It'll help make it less obvious you are gone! The Post Office will hold your mail for up to a month and you will either get it delivered to a specific day or you can pick it up when you return. Newspapers will do the exact same thing.
Make sure that all windows and doors are locked. You may choose to leave a light on in your apartment. Consider a self-storage facility for specialty items such as stereos, computers, and gaming consoles. Have a trusted neighbor or friend check your location while you are gone. Remove from your vehicle and leave it locked in an extremely visible, well lit, area. Stop checking in on social networks. Seriously. "Hey, thief. I am totally not home!" Nothing is worse than coming home to that tuna sandwich that you tossed out over a week ago but didn’t put in the dumpster. To avoid such a ‘welcome home’ stench it is a good idea to take out all the trash in the house before you leave.
Many Landlords have a specific fee that they charge for each overdue day of rent. When you are at home you will often get reminders in the mail or posted on your door to remind you that your rent is due or that you are being charged a fee for each day that you do not pay rent. However, when you are on a three week back packing trip in Europe it is easy to forget that your rent was due so that when you return home you wind a large rent fee or even an eviction notice. All I’m saying is. Make sure you pay your rent!!!
